How to Make Wooden Monogram Magnets

The magnets in this tutorial were made for my all three of my kids’ teachers, school staff, and members of the administration they interacted with on a daily basis. We chose the school colors for this DIY project: blue for the background and yellow for the letters.

PRO TIP: These make great teacher gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week in May or as a small token right before students go on winter break for Christmas or other holiday. Don’t forget to include a card or short note written or signed by your child!

The letters are the first and last initials of each recipient’s name. You may notice a “duplicate” magnet in the photos. That was not an error. There was one teacher and one paraprofessional at school who had the same initials.

Attach the Letters and Magnets

  1. Attach the painted letters to shape with a strong adhesive or hot glue.
  2. Flip your decorated wooden letters over and apply a small amount of strong adhesive or hot glue to the back.
  3. Press the magnets firmly into place and allow the glue to dry completely.

Seal the Magnets (Recommended)

Even though this is an optional step, I still highly recommend using Mod Podge to seal the letters on the magnets. Use the Gloss for a shiny finish (my personal preference) or the Matte.

If you decide to follow this step, do it after gluing the letters on but before adding the magnet on the back. Let dry completely before proceeding.

Conclusion

And there you have it—your own custom wooden monogram magnets, ready to brighten up any magnetic surface! This DIY project is not only easy and fun but also offers endless possibilities for personalization. Whether you’re making them for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, these wooden monogram magnets are sure to impress. Happy crafting!
